There is much curiosity as to what exactly is discussed during these meetings. There have been some suggestions that the visits are more than just catch up sessions with the former president and that they actually engage on pertinent issues, including those related to President Cyril Ramaphosa.

When Jacob Zuma met with Malema for their own tea date, Andile Mngxitama was rather vocal in warning the former president to be careful in his engagement with the EFF leader.

Friday’s “tea” encounter between Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema and former president Jacob Zuma has apparently been long in the making despite it being portrayed as a spontaneous invite on social media, according to a Sunday Times report.

The paper reported that sources familiar with the matter claimed the meeting at Zuma’s Nkandla homestead, in KwaZulu-Natal, was part of a strategy being pursued by so-called “progressive forces” within the ANC opposed to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s leadership.

In a meeting with the ANC top six on Monday, former president Jacob Zuma maintained his defiance of the Zondo Commission of Inquiry.

Zuma told the top six he has been subjected to unfair persecution and prosecution over two decades.

​The commission is seeking a two-year jail time for Zuma at the Constitutional Court for his refusal to appear before it. Zuma said Deputy Chief Justice Zondo, who fathered a child with Zuma's ex-wife Tobeka, is biased against him.
